It looks like the upcoming sequel to "Mirror's Edge" may be titled "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" citing a trademark filed by EA in Europe.

EA recently announced that the new "Mirror's Edge" is all set to come out in the fourth quarter of FY2016, and now the developer has filed a trademark for something dubbed "Mirror's Edge Catalyst."

The trademark was categorically filed for "computer game software; downloadable computer game software via a global computer network and wireless devices; video game software," and "entertainment services, namely, providing an on-line computer game," according to records on IGN.

Although it's unclear how Catalyst relates to Mirror's Edge, however one way or another, it seems that it does.

PC Gamer notes that most of the times companies file and compete over trademarks, but sometimes the fillings are actually forged intended to excite and then anger the fan base.

That being said, soon after the reports of the trademark filing surfaced, official Mirror's Edge Twitter account revealed the image shown above, confirming that Catalyst is not only real but also relevant to the action-adventure platform video game.

Prior to the Catalyst tweet, speculations making rounds suggested that the trademark filing could probably be unrelated to Mirror's Edge 2.

There were suggestions that it may possibly be for some sort of mobile game tie-in instead. However, the fact that the tweet is the first out of Mirror's Edge account since Jan., and the only second of this year, is enough to prove that it has to be a real deal.

The original Mirror's Edge failed to achieve mass-market commercial success, but EA this time is planning to cast a wider net and reel in a larger audience with the sequel.

Previous EA executive Frank Gibeau explained, "Our goal in any product is to try and grow the audience."

"We're definitely taking into account the opportunity to reach a bigger group of people. We think we've got the right story and accessibility that can do that."

EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund previously described the new Mirror's Edge as a "true next-gen idea," Gibeau said.

"It just happened to be a game design that I don't think you can build on an old-gen machine," Soderlund said. "It doesn't work the way it's designed. And that also appeals to me. We could maybe get it to work on one, but we would have to compromise on too many things. With this we didn't have to."

"It's a true next-gen idea," he added. "With next-gen execution and that felt right."

Announced back at E3 2013, Mirror's Edge 2 is currently in the making at DICE. More details about DICE's first-person action parkour game is likely to be revealed when Electronic Arts holds a press conference next week at E3.
