Destiny's upcoming expansion called "The Taken King" is slated to launch this year, opening up a new subclass for each of Destiny's three classes.

Strong rumors doing rounds suggest Destiny's next major expansion, dubbed "The Taken King," will launch on Sept. 15, according to reports on Kotaku.

Kotaku obtained marketing material for the upcoming expansion and also backed up the details with other, unnamed sources. If reports are anything to go by, at $40 the expansion will cost twice the cost of the hit first-person shooter's two previous expansions i.e. "The Dark Below" and "House of Wolves."

Along with other things, the upcoming expansion, "The Taken King" is slated to offer a new subclass for Destiny's three classes. Also on the way is a new elemental super ability.

"An electrical storm for Warlocks (arc); a gravity bow for Hunters (void); and a flaming hammer for Titans (solar). Hardcore Destiny players will notice that each of these abilities revolves around the element each respective class lacks today," per Kotaku.

While speculations suggesting the new content expected to hit this September are doing rounds, Bungie have released a teaser image of a container that reads, "Caution Explosive Projectile," Gaming Bolt noted.

Destiny developers speak about the box in a vague way saying, "We know what you're thinking: "What's in the box?!" These and other surprises are on the way to E3,"..."Can't wait to show you what we'll unpack over the course of the show."

If speculations are anything to go by, the content of the box probably will point towards "The Taken King."

In addition, the leak also suggests that "The Taken King" will have a new raid in which players fight against Oryx, the father of Crota. The expansion will also include new multiplayer maps, more Strikes, and a lot more.

Destiny publisher Activision too teased a new Destiny expansion coming this fall as the game's biggest ever. "The Taken King" would be Destiny's first expansion that is offered outside the game's DLC pass.

The name "The Taken King" first came into the spotlight earlier this year through trademark filings, and surfaced again through Red Bull.

Destiny has not released details about the forthcoming content, but just said it will have some Destiny news to announce at E3 next week. Bungie has also trademarked something call "Eververse" recently.
