As early as now, comic superhero fans are already looking forward to the next "Spider-Man" movie which is set to hit theaters in 2017. And with the latest update about the movie production, fans may have something to talk about in the next weeks.
According to Deadline, Tom Holland has just been cast as "Spider-Man" in th 2017 film. Holland was reportedly chosen from a short list of actors considered for the role which included "Never Let Me Go" actor Charlie Rowe.
Comicbook.com noted that Tom Holland is a 19-year-old English actor born in Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom. The actor is reportedly known for playing the lead role in "Billy Elliot the Musical" at the Victoria Place Theatre in London, as well as for starring in the movie "The Impossible." Tom Holland also reportedly played Gregory Cromwell in the "Wolf Hall TV" mini-series.
Celeb Dirty Laundry recounted other actors who also played "Spider-Man" on the big screen.
"Toby Maguire originally played Peter Parker/Spider-Man," John Panichella wrote in his article. "But was then replaced with Andrew Garfield when The Amazing Spider-Man franchise lost. Unfortunately, after the sequel failed to live up to the success of the first film, Andrew Garfield left the series."
Will Tom Holland live up to expectations in the 2017 "Spider-Man" movie? He may need a lot of support from Jon Watts who was chosen to direct the movie. And judging by the way Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman admired the director, it seems that Tom Holland is in good hands.
"It's a big day here at Sony," Rothman reportedly said in an announcement about the 2017 "Spider-Man" movie. "Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that's why their results are so outstanding. I'm confident Spider-Man will be no exception."
"I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start."
