Nina Dobrev's possible return in "The Vampire Diaries" has been much speculated, especially after Ian Somerhalder hinted that Elena Gilbert's exit in the story was never final.

"The way it was done was actually incredible, because it allows people to know that she's still there... She's not dead" Ian Somerhalder said on an appearance in Extra, as quoted by Seventeen Magazine.

"We're actually very excited about telling this story. Mystic Falls without Elena Gilbert is going to be very different. We want to go back to that Season 1 and Season 2 of storytelling... I think that the last scene in the last episode that you see is truly a depiction of what this next season's going to be."

Is Ian Somerhalder annoyed that there's a possibility of Nina Dobrev rejoining the cast of "The Vampire Diaries?"

Speaking about his ex-girlfriend's possible TVD comeback, the actor who plays Damon Salvatore reminded fans that Elena Gilbert's life is tied to the fate of Bonnie, played by Kat Graham.

"In 70 years, or however long Bonnie lives, Elena will resurface at some point, although we'll be very old when that happens," Ian added.

It may not seem like Ian Somerhalder is all psyched up to work again with Nina Dobrev in the near future, but the press just wouldn't give it a rest. In their appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, MTV asked Ian and the rest of "The Vampire Diaries" gang about Elena Gilbert's possible return.

"She's still there, dude," Ian Somerhalder said jokingly. "She's in a casket; she's having a nap."

Ian Somerhalder's co-stars Paul Wesley had more positive things to say about the probability of Nina Dobrev returning "The Vampire Diaries."

"[Characters] die and come back," Paul Wesley told MTV. "It's like Jesus!"

"I think that's what's fun about this series," Candice Accola dished out. "You never know when characters are going to leave, you never know when they're going to come back."

"That's been a constant for six seasons, now. So the fact that, for such a big departure, that it is left open-ended, is really true to the show."

Ian Somerhalder dated Nina Dobrev for three years before the couple called it quits in 2013. The actor recently married Nikki Reed after less than a year of dating.
