When Jeremy Lin dons on the Charlotte Hornets' uniform, he's going to be hounded by the same issue that has been following him throughout his career-defense.
The Charlotte Hornets' fansite, At The Hive, analyzed Linsanity's defense and how it would help his new team.
"The subject defensive prowess of Jeremy Lin is something that divides a lot of people who watch a lot of basketball," it said. "Is Jeremy Lin a bad defender or has he been on bad defensive teams? Was he replaced in lineups by better defenders or the victim of bad coaching?"
Jeremy Lin has been unfairly criticized for his perceived lack of defense when in fact, he's a committed defender who, more often than not, can hold his own against his man.
According to Hoops Habit, during Linsanity's season with the Los Angeles Lakers last year, he was holding his opponents down 2.1 percent than their season average.
"Inside 10 feet, he's harassing them into 5.9 percent less and finally, he's keeping them 6.1 percent below their averages inside six feet," it said.
However, Jeremy Lin had defensive lapses on the three-point line as he allowed 53.8% for his opponents, or an astounding 17.6 percent over their average. That means he has a tendency to go under the screen, or to play free-safety to get those steals, which can be easily corrected under a new system with the Charlotte Hornets.
The NBA website revealed that he's also averaging for his career 1.3 steals and 0.4 blocks, so that means Linsanity is not all offense and he does play defense. It's just a matter of harnessing his skills to the right direction.
Although to be fair, the Los Angeles Lakers were at the bottom of the defensive rating last season and their defense was basically packing the paint and playing on the percentages, to the detriment of Jeremy Lin.
"That is an indictment on Lin's defense, but it's also indicative of a team that isn't good enough defensively to allow Lin to cheat towards the 3-point line," Hoops Habit said.
