"D-Day" amped up the action in its third episode, as an earthquake demolished Seoul. The jTBC tragedy brilliantly unfurled, as the first scenes depicted the main characters as they carried out their normal routine.
Kang Joo Ran (Kim Hye Eun) was peacefully shopping at a box store with her small son. Hotshot physician, Han Woo JIn (Ha Seok Jin), attempted to take a break after being scolded for his reaction to the previous tremors. Goo Ja Hyuk sat amongst prominent officials, in a glass ensconced office building.
The initial scenes continued to set up a seemingly tranquil day, before returning to Jung Ddol Mi (Jung So Min) and Lee Hae Sung (Kim Young Kwang), who witness the destructive nature of the earthquake as it leveled the buildings around them.
"D-Day" will most likely serve as a breakout role for Kim Young Kwang, who demonstrated his ability to lead sweet romantic comedies in "Pinocchio." His portrayal of Hae Sung is a far cry from his spoiled rich kid character in "Pinocchio." As a physician, he is challenged with the daunting task of aiding injured civilians, regardless of his prior skills.
One of the most gripping plots of the third episode centered on a pregnant woman and her spouse. Her husband desperately sought help from Hae Sung, after realizing that his wife was trapped in her car that was precariously close to exploding. Hae Sung assisted the man, narrowly escaping with the soon-to-be mother.
Hae Sung apologizes to the man and his wife, due to his lack of experience in obstetrics. He departs from them with the cautionary words that they should seek attention from a medically advanced hospital.
At this point, "D-Day" makes no bones of driving forth the concept that an advanced hospital is likely the most expensive hospital and one that is most concerned with caring for wealthy patients.
In reaction to the earthquake, the sparkling hospital where Hae Sung used to be employed shutters its doors, leaving the injured to fend for themselves.
Once again, Ddol Mi and Hae Sung emerge as heroes, when the pregnant woman makes her way to their hospital. With no power and limited resources, they deliver her twins. Hae Sung moves quickly to aid one of the babies who is struggling to breathe, improvising a suction to by using his own mouth.
"D-Day" is a must-see drama for viewers who are seeking the heart-pounding action of a movie, but enjoy the frequency of a twice-weekly series.
