October is "Breast Cancer Awareness" month and the national social media campaign "No Bra Day 2015" has once again caught attention of activists and protestors equally. Most women posted their selfies without their inner wear including Selena Gomez who was spotted in NYC with a distinct lack of support, reported TMZ.com.

National social media messages were buzzing with #NoBraDay 2015 and bra-less selfies of women, when October 13 was declared the day to show support for breast cancer, said News Channel 4. An event which is now known as 'fauxliday,' a term dubbed by Slate's Christina Cauterucci, or 'quasi-holiday' does not have any confirmed sources of its origin.

The group's supposed Facebook page indicates that the movement was born in 2012, but it's unclear why exactly the campaign was launched or what it aims to do. Based on tweets, it also to exist in the U.S., the U.K. and France, said Huffington Post.

However, the event received mixed reviews from opponents and proponents alike. Some even called the event perverse. It also attracted severe backlash on the Twitter as well with both men and women claiming that the event only sexualizes women's bodies rather than taking the disease seriously, said Huffington Post.

However, the day was being visualized by proponents as a day where women were encouraged to ditch their lingerie to raise awareness about the disease, raise money for research and support the survivors. By the end of the year, More than 231,000 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer as per the recent estimates by The American Cancer Society said AB7News.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation did not appear to be recognizing "No Bra Day" but did recognize breast cancer awareness month with various fundraisers and survivor stories. It lso shared a lot of information on how to perform a breast self-exam and spot early symptoms and signs on their Facebook page and website, said NY Daily News.
