Dole Spinach Recalled In 13 States Due To Salmonella Contamination, No Reported Case Of Illness So Far

Dole Spinach has announced a massive recall of the bagged greens in 13 states in the US on October 15. Dole Spinach recall is proposed in the wake of its possible Salmonella contamination alert in random sample tests.

Dole Fresh Vegetables is voluntarily recalling few batches of bagged spinach as a result of possible Salmonella contamination revealed in a test conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The spinach bags coded A27409B & A27409A, with an Enjoy By date of October 15 and UPC 7143000976 are included in the Dole spinach recall list, according to Eco Watch.

The product code as well as Enjoy By date is found on the right upper most corner of the bag whereas the UPC is printed on the other side of the package under the bar code. The company is recalling the products out of great caution though there are no cases of illness reported due to contaminated spinach intake.

Dole Spinach Recalled In 13 States

The spinach that was sold in 13 states are being recalled which include Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. It should be noted that Dole Baby Spinach and other salads are not included in the recall list and there is no possibility of contamination in such products.

Salmonella causes food-borne illness when food stuff contaminated with the bacteria are consumed. "The symptoms of infection include fever and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or abnormal pain. The illness primarily impacts young children, frail and elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill," reported FDA.

FDA also noted that retailers and consumers with questions may call the Dole Food Company Consumer Response Center at (800) 356-3111, which is open 8:00 am to 3:00 pm (PT) Monday - Friday.
