Sulli of the girl group f(x) has signed on to play a pirate in the upcoming blockbuster film "Pirates." She has been cast as Heuk Myo, one of the swashbuckling crewmembers on the film's Joseon-era pirate ship.
Sulli, who is currently promoting the f(x) single "Rum Pum Pum Pum," is now an idol star but she actually started out as an actress. She began acting when she was only 11, playing Princess Sun Hwa in the SBS drama "The Ballad of Seo Dong." She had a cameo appearance in "Love Needs A Miracle" and then played the childhood love of Park Yoo Chun in the theatrical drama "Vacation." In 2007 she had roles in "Punch Lady" and "The Flower Girl Is Here." In 2012, she played the leading role in "To The Beautiful You," the Korean version of "Hana Kimi," alongside SHINee's Choi Minho.
The role in "The Pirates" will be Sulli's first film role since her part in the 2008 film "Babo." After her "To The Beautiful You" role, in which she played a girl pretending to be a boy, she did express some desire to expand the types of roles she played.
"I want to try an unusual role. A role like a psychopath wouldn't be bad either," she said with a laugh. "I would like to try the role of a character that has a definite impact, even if it's not major part."
Pirates are technically criminals so it's a step in the right direction.
The film has been described as the Korean "Pirates of the Caribbean" but the twist in the Korean version is that it's women who staff the pirate ship.
Son Ye Jin, who most recently appeared in the melodrama "Shark," plays the role of the ship's captain Yeo Wol.
Pirates live to fight and steal treasure so its only natural that the ship's pirate crew will meet and fight with a band of landlocked bandits. Kim Nam Gil, Son Ye Jin's "Shark co-star and drama love interest, will lead the bandits and fans expect the film to offer the two stars a chance to revive their drama chemistry.
Once that fight is settled, the pirates and bandits will team up to fight a monstrous whale that has swallowed some treasure, including a royal seal.
Also cast in the drama are actors Yu Hae Jin, Oh Dal Soo, Ahn Nae Sang, Park Chul Min, Jo Dal Hwan and Lee Kyung Young. Filming begins soon and the movie will be released in 2014.
