Katie Holmes recently made headlines after issuing an apology statement to Leah Remini, years after both actresses left the Church of Scientology.

"I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future," Tom Cruise's ex-wife said in the statement, as quoted by Us Magazine.

Katie Holmes' apology came after Leah Remini's interview about Tom Cruise and the reason why she left the church. Leah Remini recently released a memoir titled "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology."

Leah recently recounted an instance when she was "written up" by the Church of Scientology years ago after hanging out with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

"He was like, forcibly kissing Katie," Remini told 20/20 as quoted by Entertainment Tonight. "And I said, 'Hey, get a freaking room.' And uh, well. I was written up for that."

The "King of Queens" star explained the weight of being written up in the church.

"You can assume if you say something that is critical of the church, you will be written up. Husband, wife, mother, daughter, it's what the group does to regulate itself."

Leah Remini seemed to be touched after hearing about Katie Holmes' apology.

"I'm smiling because it almost makes me want to cry," the actress said Good Morning America. "It makes me emotional because at the time that Katie and this particular crew were writing reports, it caused me a lot of time and pain in my family, being reprogrammed."

"So at the time I was fighting with her - I guess for the lack of the better word - within the church, and now I know really what she was going through."

However there are various theories surrounding the controversy, one of which is that Tom Cruise actually pushed Katie Holmes to apologize to Leah Remini.

Was it an attempt to even out the score and encourage the press to move on from Leah's revelations about Scientology?

It may not be clear right now, but one thing is for sure - Scientology leaders aren't enjoying Leah's show.

"It comes as no surprise that someone as self-absorbed as Leah Remini with an insatiable craving for attention would exploit her former faith as a publicity stunt by rewriting her history with it," the Church of Scientology said in a statement, as quoted by ET Online.

"...including omitting that she was participating in a program to remain a Scientologist by her own choice, as she was on the verge of being expelled for her ethical lapses."
