The latest installment in the nostalgic "Reply" series will be taking a break for the New Year's weekend. And that means fans of the drama 'Reply 1988" will have to wait one week longer to see the finale.

tvN will play other programming on January 1 and 2.

When asked why the show was taking a week-long break, the producers told the Korean media outlet OSEN that it was a question of quality.

"We decided to extend the time we have to film and edit so that we could make a perfect program and to do that we agreed to have a break in the programming."

"Reply 1988" is a little different than its predecessors "Reply 1997" and "Reply 1994" as it is more family focused. The drama does feature a young woman and the likely candidates for her hand. But it also tells the story of five different families living in the same northern Seoul neighborhood. That year was a pivotal year in Korea. That was the year when Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics and families got together to watch the ceremony on TV.

Sung Deok Seon is the heroine of the drama. Played by Girls Day's Hyeri, she's not fond of her sister and prefers to spend her time with her male friends. Her four friends are Kim Jung Hwan, played by Ryoo Joon Yeol, Sun Woo, played by Go Kyung Pyo, Choi Taek, played by Park Bo Gum and Ryu Dong Ryong, played by Lee Dong Gwi. Friendship will turn to romance and she will eventually marry one of them. But which one will it be? In each of the "Reply" dramas, a young woman will eventually marry one of the young men she knows. Part of the fun in watching is guessing which man she will choose.

Now viewers will have to wait a week longer to see if they guessed correctly.

So far the drama has done well, with good ratings and positive reviews. The last episode achieved 11.3 percent nationally in the Nielsen ratings.

Besides taking a cue from the previous dramas in the series, "Reply 1988" was also inspired by the long-running "Three Families Under One Roof" drama, which ran from 1986 to 1994.
