9 Korean Dramas Highlighting The LGBT Community

Due to Korea's conservative culture in general, the topic regarding the LGBT community is still a sensitive topic for several netizens.

However, due to the demand in Korean dramas in the said country and internationally, aside from giving entertainment to the viewers, it is now being used as well as a medium to tackle social issues and sensitive topics that are yet to be understood by Koreans and audiences.K-Dramas are slowly changing and presenting new plots and storyline that deals with these issues, including LGBT, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.

Creating stories and making representations on such topics on-screen can be challenging; however, Koreans are now going into different new directions.

In the recent drama "Sweet Munchies" 2020 it shows characters who are dealing with the same-gender relationship and reactions of the society. More similar scenarios and characters from the LGBT community are being featured in K-dramas. Though with its rising issue, good representations are being non-stereotypical with minor or major roles in the plot.

"My Unfamiliar Family"

One of the leading role actresses Choo Ja Hyun is a well-known lawyer and married to a doctor. She then found out that her husband Kim Tae hoon is a closeted gay. They decided to get a divorce and let him follow his heart's desire.

"Sweet Munchies"

Jung II Woo is a restaurant owner and a good chef at the same time who is in financial trouble. He joined a cooking show and pretend to be a gay chef to get funds to help his father's hospital bill. He met Lee Hak Joo, a fashion designer who is in the secret of his true gender identity. He had a crush on Jung II Woo whom he thought would accept and like him for who he is. Actor Choi Jae Hyun acted as a gay and the younger brother of Jung II Woo.

"Itaewon Class"

Actress Lee Joo Young acted as a transgender woman in the drama series. She worked hard to gather money for a surgery and it was a secret with her buddies. She works as a good chef and the secret was revealed to the media to destroy her.

"XX"

A web drama playlist, actor Lee Jong Woon acted as a perfumer who is gay. He felt devastated after his ex-lover cheated on him.

"Hi Dracula"

A mother and daughter relationship, wherein Girls' Generation Seo Hyun plays the character of a lesbian. She has a great voice but her desire to express her true identity to her mother weakens her.

"Love With Flaws"

Actor Joo Won-Suk plays the character of a bartender gay who has a problem in telling his family about his true identity. Though at the time he finally expressed his true feelings and identity, his family accepted him wholeheartedly. He also helped actor Jang Yoo-sang to overcome his struggle in online bullying by his gender preferences.

"At Eighteen"

In his teen years, ASTRO's MoonBin acted as a supporting role. In character as a high school student who just realized his attractions to the same-sex. He felt confused about what to do with himself.

"Prison Playbook"

Actor Yoo Han Yang in character as Lee Kyu Hyung is gay in the drama series. He is involved with drugs and tries to quit for his guy lover.

"Reply 1997"

INFINITE member HoYa is in character as Joon-hee who is a queer in the drama series. Despite having a strong feelings for his best friend Yoon Jae (Seo In Guk), his innocent and gentle character who knows his boundaries was loved by the viewers. The drama was released in 2012 which is during that time, LGBT is a taboo for Koreans; but his character portrayal in the drama was well-accepted by the viewers.
