"Youth of May" director spills the devastating finale between lead stars Go Min Si and Lee Do Hyun.
The KBS melodrama managed to wrap up the season with a solid viewership that garnered an average nationwide rating of 4.6 and 5.6 percent, as cited by Nielsen Korea.
With this, the Monday and Tuesday drama almost surpassed its personal best, which scored 5.7 percent for its May 25 episode.
"Youth of May" Director Reveals Reason Behind Go Min Si's Death
Exactly a week since the most talked-about finale, PD Song Min Yeob details the heart-wrenching "Youth of May" finale.
In his recent interview, cited by a South Korean outlet, the director says that he is "grateful" not just for the lead stars but the whole cast members and the team of the melodrama.
Following the success of the KBS series, the finale became a trending topic on social media after it featured Kim Myung Hee's death, played by the 26-year-old actress.
The director explained that this scene symbolized the "numerous people are living while carrying their own burdens," adding, "There were actual people like this. It was effective for Myung Hee to die in order to portray various people."
Furthermore, the "Youth of May" director also pointed out that Kim Myung Hee's heartbreaking death is set to emphasize the "emotions" that surround her character; however, it remained meaningful to those she left behind.
"Another reason why Myung Hee had to die was to bring out the emotions in the surrounding figures for the drama, and it's the reason why they won't forget even after time passes. That's why she was killed, even though it broke my heart. It's a sad story, but I think that's meaningful in its own way."
In the "Youth of May" finale, Kim Myung Hee sacrificed herself in order to save his younger brother Kim Myung Soo (Jo Yi Hyun), who was about to get shot by the military.
The drama also illustrates Hwang Hee Tae (Lee Do Hyun) in the present, and his undying love for Myung Hee still remains.
Hee Tae, who turns out to be a doctor, learned that Myung Hee's remains were located, thanks to his best friend Kim Kyung Soo (Kwon Young Chan). There, he promised her that they would see each other in the next life and vowed to be with her in eternity.
Why Oh Man Seok's Villain Character Was Not Discussed in "Youth of May" Finale
PD Song Min Yeob went to praise Oh Man Seok for playing the role of the villain Hwang Ki Nam.
In his interview, the director says that he is "grateful" to have him as one of the cast and lauded how he gave justice to the role.
"It wasn't an easy role to portray, and there were many difficult scenes," he mentioned.
As for the finale, Hwang Ki Nam was not shown during the present time; however, "Youth of May" director explains that it might make the viewers uncomfortable knowing that he was one of the reasons behind the death of several people during the Gwangju Uprising.
"Whether Ki Nam lived well or died, he was one of the main perpetrators. When thinking of that, I thought that depicting how Hwang Ki Nam is living in the present could make some people very uncomfortable," the PD explained.
In the drama, Hwang Ki Nam was the defense head who ordered his eldest son, Hee Tae, arrested and Kim Myung Hee to get killed by the military. But, unfortunately, it was his youngest son, Hwang Jung Tae (Choi Seung Hoon), who was shot, which prompted his whole family to leave him.
