Han Ga In Reveals Being Hesistant to Play Kim Soo Hyun’s Lover in ‘Moon Embracing the Sun’

Han Ga In recalls the time she starred in "The Moon Embracing the Sun" and played Kim Soo Hyun's lover.

The novel-based K-drama was a huge hit in 2012 as it depicts a love story between the ruler of Joseon, King Lee Hwon, played by Kim Soo Hyun, and a female shaman named Wol, portrayed by Han Ga In.

After 11 years since it aired, the actress took a trip down memory lane and spoke about what it's like to work with Kim Soo Hyun.

While Han Ga In was dubbed as the "Queen of Ratings" at the time, due to soaring viewership of "Moon Embracing Sun" and even landed as one of the most-watched K-dramas of the year, the actress once confessed that she had doubts to accept the offer.

As obtained by a media outlet, during her guest appearance in "Radio Star" the South Korean beauty says that she is "worried" to star alongside Kim Soo Hyun and play as his lover.

"'I'm way older than Kim Soo Hyun.' He's six or seven years younger than me," she says, explaining the reason why she was hesitant to be his leading lady.

Besides their huge age gap, Han Ga In also talked about the difference between their image.

At the time, she was married to actor Yeon Jung Hoon who is also her co-star in the 2003 K-drama "Yellow Handkerchief."

On the other hand, Kim Soo Hyun was a rising star back then and had wrapped up his hit K-drama "Dream High" where he plays a high school student alongside Bae Suzy, IU, Ok Taec Yeon, and more.

"I thought it would be hard for the viewers to get immersed in the drama," she said adding that the actor portrayed a royal while she played a character of lower class and thought that they wouldn't look good together.


Interestingly, the historical K-drama gained positive responses from the viewers.

Apart from getting a double-digit rating for its pilot episode, the "Moon Embracing the Sun" finale scored 46.5 percent nationwide while 42.2 percent in metropolitan areas.

After "Moon Embracing Sun" Han Ga In went on hiatus but return to the small screen after six years with the thriller romance series "Mistress."

She starred alongside Shin Hyun Bin, Choi Hee Seo, and Gu Jae Yi as the drama depicts the story of the scandalous lives of a group of four girlfriends.

Although she didn't return to making K-dramas, Han Ga In is active in variety shows. In 2022, she headlined various programs like "Circle House" on SBS with Lee Seung Gi as well as "Sing for Gold" which recently concluded.
