Ray Allen's jersey will say "Jesus Shuttlesworth" at the NBA's nickname games this season. The Miami Heat shooting guard once played the character Jesus Shuttlesworth in Spike Lee's 1998 sports-drama film, He Got Game, and it looks like he will be reliving the character soon at the NBA.
The basketball league decided to make the games a bit more interesting this season by letting players wear jerseys with their chosen nicknames in several games. Players have been coy about the nicknames they will be using so far, although some players have obvious choices. LeBron James of the Miami Heat will most likely have one saying "King James" on it, while Jason Terry of the Brooklyn Nets will probably choose a jersey that says "Jet" on it. However, Spike Lee spoiled it for everyone by revealing Allen's jersey to the entire Internet. The director posted a photo of it showing the nickname "J. Shuttlesworth" on Instagram.
Drafted in 1996 as the fifth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves (before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks), Allen carved a name for himself by being a consistent and clutch shooter. It's this reputation that helped him land his now iconic role in He Got Game.
In the film, Jesus Shuttlesworth was a promising basketball prospect being recruited by the country's top schools. The plot takes a different turn when his estranged father, Jake Shuttlesworth (played by Denzel Washington) is released from prison and tries to reconcile with him.
Allen received critical acclaim for his performance in the movie. As a result, teammates and fans started calling him "Jesus," after his character.
Everybody knows that Allen's got game. Even at this point in his career, he still manages to deliver stellar plays whenever he's on the court. It's no surprise that even something as simple as using a nickname on a basketball jersey can cause quite a stir when he's involved.
