'Queen of Tears' Quickly Scores Success Ahead of Drama's Debut

It's safe to say that renowned writer Park Ji Eun has created another brilliant work, noting the exceptional "Queen of Tears." Apart from its incredible lineup of actors and actresses, the series' narrative is impressively written.

Thanks to the drama's overall production and the team's combined hard work, "Queen of Tears" actually attained early success even before it premiered in March.

According to a source, Kim Ji Won and Kim Soo Hyun's drama received its revenue ahead of its debut.

In accordance with the profit structure of the K-drama industry, production companies can recover a portion of production costs even before the series airs through broadcasting fees or advertising revenue.

In the "Queen of Tears'" case, which has a large production cost, the revenue through broadcast fees is estimated to account for around 50% of the production cost.

This means that besides the expected revenue, the drama's producer had to ensure a minimal revenue of approximately 22 million USD (30 billion won).

'Queen of Tears' Team Expected to Receive Additional Benefits From OTT Company Distributor

In general, big-budgeted productions receive broadcast fees early on.

"Queen of Tears" is estimated to have ensured at least 70 percent of production costs from Netflix. Broadcast fees and pre-sale fees from Netflix have exceeded the break-even point for the rom-com series even before its release.

In addition, the producer of "Queen of Tears" can earn additional revenue through domestic PPL, OST, and VOD sales. Since the drama is amassing popularity in and outside Korea, and its viewer rate increases, the production will receive additional benefits from contract terms.

'Queen of Tears' Declared Most Popular K-Drama

Meanwhile, the weekend drama continues to remain the most popular K-drama on Netflix and maintains its spot in the most-watched non-English series category.

"Queen of Tears" has also joined tvN's list of most successful K-dramas in history as the series snatched the No. 3 position from "Reply 1988."

Lead stars Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Ji Won, and Park Sung Hoon are also amassing global popularity, and entered the most buzzworthy K-actor rankings.
