"The Atypical Family" was lauded for its unique narrative, but its finale got the viewers confused. Thankfully, fans flock to online portals to explain the plot.
'The Atypical Family' Creates Buzz for Its Confusing Ending
JTBC's fantasy-romance drama "The Atypical Family," also known as "Although I Am Not a Hero," concluded over the weekend.
The series follows the story of Bok Gwi Ju and his family, who have different supernatural powers. He's able to travel back in time, but only to happy times in his life. He becomes afflicted with depression, which leads him to lose his ability.
Like him, his family also loses powers due to modern day illnesses.
A con artist, Do Da Hae, happens to get involved with Bok Gwi Ju and his family. She begins to live with them, and change starts to occur.
"The Atypical Family" was distributed through Netflix making it easier for international viewers to watch. It starred Jang Ki Yong and Chun Woo Hee as Bok Gwi Ju and Do Da Hae, respectively.
Different from the usual 16 episodes series, netizens were surprised to know that the fantasy-drama only consisted of 12 episodes. Due to this, some were disappointed with its short broadcast and its ending might be rushed.
The storyline mainly focused on Gwi Ju, who has the power to travel back in time. He needed to save Da Hae 13 years ago when she was stuck in a school fire. His mother saw in a dream that he would die in a fire.
With this, the family and even viewers feared that the male lead would have a tragic ending.
Netizens Explain Possible Twists That Made Bok Gwi Ju Return
As the story progressed, he successfully rescued Da Hae but it appeared that he didn't survive. He never returned to the present, and his family mourned for him, believing he died.
The drama did a time-slip of what appeared to be five years where Da Hae gave birth to her and Gwi Ju's son, who discovered that their son also has the power to find lost things from the past.
Do Da Hae took a chance and showed him a photo of his father. When she was about to leave the room, she turned around and saw their son standing with Gwi Ju, indicating that the son successfully retrieved him from the past.
With that, the drama concluded.
Viewers were scratching their heads and had mixed feelings about the ending. Some felt it was rushed and confusing, while others were questioning whether Gwi Ju was dead, trapped in either an abyss or in the past.

To help some viewers to understand the ending, plenty of netizens explained what they think happened.
They highlighted that the son must have traveled 18 years ago and brought back his dad from the fire in which he saved Da Hae, as he was clearly wearing the outfit he wore at that time.
Someone made an effort to make a presentation to explain the complicated timeline. It's believed that Bok Gwi Ju's son was able to summon him before the explosion happened, making him return and reunite with the family.
Despite its confusing ending, "The Atypical Family" gracefully concluded with an average rating of 4.9 percent nationwide, based on Nielsen Korea's latest data report.
Viewers also agreed that the drama has a unique narrative with a variety of beautiful cinematography, family, friendships, romance, complex characters, plot twists, and more.
