Choi Woo Shik, who everyone in the world today knows for his role in Oscar-winning Parasite, has brought to life so many characters with layers of inner truth.
But it wasn't always meant to be—he only auditioned in Korea because his then-girlfriend secretly sent in an application on his behalf.
Choi, the former high-achiever Canadian student, was living a life away from the acting world where there was less pressure.
As a boy, he was a solid student at Simon Fraser University, pursuing humanities studies with potential as an honors candidate. His family envisioned an established career for him, but fate had other plans.

At the time, Choi was dating a girl who worked in a Korean talent agency and told him about submitting his profile, telling him that he should give acting a try since Korea has lots of guys who looked like a "mean f—er," but guys with soft eyes are "like the hottest."
Choi was shocked to hear that he had made the email cut and shortly found himself on a plane to Korea, abandoning his studies. And on short notice, he began a journey that would change his life.
Choi made his acting debut in 2011 with the MBC drama The Duo, in which he gained attention for his remarkable talent.
He skyrocketed to international fame after playing Kim Ki Woo in Parasite, attracting interest from Hollywood and further establishing his range as an actor.
Choi has been slowly proving himself, but he continues to showcase his depth of skill and emotional range in his new role as a man who thinks he's able to spot criminals in The Good Bad Mother on Netflix.
Looking back on the journey he took, he said that his ex-girlfriend's surprise intervention was a good thing, saying, "I'm glad – you know what I mean?"
