Newcomer Lee Chae Min has been reported as the new male lead for the drama "The Tyrant's Chef," following Park Sung-hoon leaving the project amidst controversy.
Confirmation of the casting change came from an entertainment industry insider who spoke to Sports Chosun on January 13.
Lee will reportedly appear with Im YoonA, one of the most popular actresses, in a fantasy survival romance 500 years apart, in which a French chef time-slips to meet a globetrotting king noted for his culinary skills.
The drama has attracted tremendous attention due to its unique premise and solid production team, directed by Jang Tae-yoo, who is known for his work on the hit drama "My Love from the Star."
Park Sung Hoon exited the project after a controversy regarding explicit content posted on his personal social media account.
On January 11, the production team stated that they "continued various discussions" with Park and his agency "but ultimately decided that he will not be a part of the drama."
The production team added, "We consulted with him a lot, but because of this, it will be difficult for him to work on this project." Since then, both parties have weighed in with apologies regarding the incident.
Fans and netizens have shared mixed opinions on sites such as TheQoo about Lee Chae-min's casting.
Posted one user, "I hope you're good." Another user replied, "Way better than the previous one," hinting at previous casting performances.
On the other side, others were doubtful about the change. Is the age gap not excessive? One of which asked whether the chemistry between the leads was going to be an issue.
User 1: "I believe the visuals will turn out well, but I hope he can act well for a historical drama.
User 2: "Wouldn't care less; just give me the visuals."
