Golden Globes 2014; Woody Allen Honored In Absencia For Movie Making Contribution, Award Accepted by Diane Keaton; Mathew McConaughey Best Actor Drama, Cate Blanchett Best Actress Drama

It used to be that the Golden Globes was just a vague pointer to the main event, the Oscars. But that has changed after the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler duo were guest hosts Sunday, making the event a TV hit in its own right.

The Awards ceremony began with a commentary on societal trends of 2014, "Good evening to everyone in the audience and to all the women and gay men watching at home."

BBC News reported that some of the experienced actors on stage seemed to have stage fright because Fey and Poehler had the perfect script to deliver and it was difficult to measure up.

The highlight of the presentation was Fey's remarks about 'Gravity' being "the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age," reports BBC.

For writing, directing, producing and acting in movies for four decades, Woody Allen was honored with the Cecil B. Demille Award. However, Allen was not there to accept the award.

Instead, Allen's former leading lady in 'Annie Hall', Diane Keaton accepted it for him.

"It's kind of hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that 179 of the world's most captivating actresses have appeared in Woody Allen's films," Keaton was quoted as saying by CBS News.

"And there's a reason for this. And the reason is, they wanted to. They wanted to because Woody's women can't be compartmentalized. They struggle, they love, they fall apart, they dominate, they're flawed. They are, in fact, the hallmark of Woody's work. But what's even more remarkable is absolutely nothing links these unforgettable characters from the fact that they came from the mind of Woody Allen."

"Woody's films have been changing the way we think about life, love and the pursuit of neuroses forever," noted Keaton.

Among other notable scenes at the Golden Globes, Matthew McConaughey won best actor in a drama and Cate Blanchett won best actress in a drama.
