Marvel Studios sure isn't wasting time in 2014. Just after the Michael Douglas Ant-Man confirmation, it seems a Dr. Strange movie casting news has arrived and it's a big one! According to reports, Johnny Depp is reportedly in talks to play Dr. Strange.
Last 2011, Comicbook.com suggested that a great superhero movie role for Johnny Depp would be Dr. Strange. Of course, there have been numerous rumors tying Johnny Depp to Dr. Strange over the years, but most of the rumors have turned out to be wishful fan casting and no real Dr. Strange movie casting has been done.
Now, it looks like the Dr. Strange movie casting with Johnny Depp as Dr. Strange is for real. According to Latino Review, a source has indicated that Johnny Depp is meeting with Marvel Studios to talk about the role of Dr. Strange.
Johnny Depp has a strong relationship with Disney, who happens to own Marvel Studios. Even though Johnny Depp has a strong fan base, his last couple movies haven't done well at the box office. A superhero movie could be just Depp's ticket to rejuvenate his career.
According to Frazier Tharpe of Complex.com, even if the deal does go down, the soonest a Dr. Strange movie release would be 2016, meaning it doesn't factor into the batch of films Marvel considers a part of "Phase 2." That began with "Iron Man 3" and will end with "The Avengers: Age of Ultron". Whoever ends up signing on to play the Dr. Strange won't do so for a while, definitely not in any Marvel films slated for this year unless they appear on a cameo.
Dr. Strange is a mystical superhero, often referred to as the Sorcerer Supreme, who contends with threats of the magical variety. Over the years in the comics he's been affiliated with almost everyone in the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man and the Avengers, but the nature of the character's storylines would move the Marvel films firmly into a fantastical and magical realm that they've only just begun to explore.
