The New Girl cast will be welcoming Prince as a guest star for its Super Bowl episode. Fox has announced that the elusive musician will be appearing in a special episode that will air after the Super Bowl.
This is surprising news, as Prince doesn't venture out into the limelight much anymore. What's even more surprising is that he volunteered for the role. The 55-year-old musician-songwriter-actor is actually a fan of the show. Executive producer Brett Baer told E! News, "He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan. He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey [Deschanel] and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing." Baer also said that he wanted his guest appearance to help Nick (Jack Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) with their relationship.
The When Doves Cry singer will be playing himself in the show. He will be inviting Jess and Cece (Hannah Simone) to a party at his mansion, and Nick, Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris), and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) will crash it.
Though it will be the first time for the multi-talented man to act in a TV comedy, it won't be his first acting gig. He was the star of the movie Purple Rain back in the 80s. He also appeared in the movies Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge.
Prince joins the long line of notable guest appearances that New Girl has lined up for its third season, which started this January. As previously reported, Linda Cardellini of Freaks and Geeks, Mad Men fame will play Jess' bad girl older sister. The OC's Adam Brody will be joining the cast as one of Jess' ex-boyfriends. Past guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner, who plays Jess' parents, will be returning to the show this season as well.
