(New Delhi) -- The death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Sashi Tharoor, former U.N. employee turned politician is still under investigation by the police.
She was found by Tharoor in her hotel room lying in her bed, when he returned from an official meeting. The couple had shifted to the hotel citing the formal ministerial residence was being painted.
Tharoor and a member of his staff have been questioned. There were reports of Tharoor suffering from a chest pain, which has been taken care of medical personnel after he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital.
Police said the death was caused by suicide, but they have scaled back saying it could have been poisoning, suicide, or even a natural heart attack.
The media are following this story closely since a day before Sunanda disclosed details of Tharoor's affair with a Pakistani journalist. Her tweets said that such a relationship undermines her role as a wife and as a woman. Although she initially admitted to sending the tweets from her account, later she denied it.
Later, the couple released a statement that their Twitter accounts were breached and that they are 'happily married' and intend to remain so. Tharoor also mentioned that Sunanda was ill and receiving treatment, adding that he would appreciate privacy from the media.
Tharoor and Sunandana were married in 2010, when she was a Dubai-based entrepreneur originally from Canada. Indian media reports that they were a high-profile couple, always in the limelight.
Reports of a row between Sunandana and Tharoor have also been reported since Wednesday when the tweets went live; Tharoor presumably has 2 million followers on Twitter.
Sunandana spoke with the Economic Times saying that her husband was having an affair with Tarar, and that she would file for a divorce.
"That woman [Ms Tarar] woman pursued and pursued him [Mr Tharoor]... men are stupid anyway... for all you know she is a Pakistani agent. Where's love, where's loyalty in this world... I am so distraught," Sunandana was quoted as saying.
Mehr Tahrar, the journalist suspected by Sunandana to be having an affair with her husband, is in the middle of a controversy that hovers around the mystery of this tragedy. Tahrar reportedly interviewed Tharoor in Delhi and described him in a positive light according to reports.
The media is waiting for official news of the investigation, but it seems apparent from the statement released by the couple that the tragedy is a result of another social media mishap:
"Various distorted accounts of comments allegedly made by Sunanda have appeared in the press. It appears that some personal and private comments responding to these unauthorised tweets - comments that were not intended for publication - have been misrepresented and led to some erroneous conclusions," said the statement, reports BBC News.
