In an interview after her win over Ana Ivanovic, Eugenie Bouchard described her predicament as, "You gotta start from the bottom and now we're here, right?"
An appropriate statement that says a lot about her surprise win over a former World No. 1 and 2008 French Open Champ, Ivanovic.
She is the first Canadian to bring laurels to her country by entering a Grand Slam singles than any American counterparts since 1968, marking the Tennis Open Era.
Known as 'Genie' by her friends, she was happy with that statistic, responding, "That's really cool!" adding, "that's an honor. I'll take that," the New York Times reported.
The semifinals will play Bouchard vs. Li Na from China, who is not a newcomer to Melbourne Park. She was a finalist at the Australian Open and she is seeded No. 4. So there might be a little bit of advantage for Li going into the next game. She is determined to repeat her finalist appearances and her strong game play led to a routine 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 28 seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the quarterfinal.
Li is confident she can repeat her final appearances in 2011 and 2013. "I've got a lot of confidence because I was match point down and I came back to win that match," said Li in an online report by BBC. "I believe in myself even more. I hope I can take one more step this year."
Ana Ivanovic, who was quick to show her might over top seeded Serena Williams in the previous round, looked on course to reach the semi-finals when she safely packed away the first set.
Bouchard who aced the second set said in a BBC News report, "It's something I've been doing since I was five years old and working my whole life for and sacrificing a lot of things for. So it's not exactly a surprise. I always expect myself to do well."
"I'm just happy to have gone through this step. I'm not done. I have a match on Thursday. I'm just looking forward to that."
Ivanovic who looked in top form when playing Serena Williams conceded that she was not playing her best: "I was battling with my right leg since the beginning of the tournament. Then the left one came on today. Despite all that, I was still on court. I was doing my best. Today she was the better player."
