New Girl Season 3's pre-super bowl episode was all about Jess' birthday. It's a series highlight for sure, as it tells the story of the first time either Jess (played by Zooey Deschanel) or Nick (Jack Johnson) celebrated a birthday as a couple.
The episode, titled "Birthday", was all about Nick trying to keep Jess preoccupied until it was time for the surprise birthday party he planned for her. The thing is, Jess wanted to start the day early, and Nick, who decided to hold the party in the evening, had to come up with all sorts of shenanigans to kill time. Jess even mistook a children's birthday picnic at the park to be hers, and Nick had to think of a way to get out of that one. Throughout the episode, Jess really had to deal with the fact that her birthday was turning out to be a non-event.
Their housemates were also in on it. Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Winston (Lamorne Morris), who are always competitive with each other, had a bake-off while trying to hide the party decorations from Jess. Eventually, they managed to get over their differences and came up with a joint cake.
In the end, all's well that ends well. Nick managed to get Jess to the movie theater for the surprise party. He even showed a sweet video, with appearances from Jess' parents (played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner), her co-teacher Rose (Angela Kinsey), her friend Dr. Sadie (June Diane Raphael), and beer delivery guy Bearclaw (Josh Gad) who once a weird thing with Jess.
So far, New Girl Season 3 is proving to be extremely satisfying for fans of Nick and Jess as a couple, and there's more to come. The show's special Super Bowl episode will air on February 2, with special guest Prince. The musician, who actually volunteered for the guest spot, will play himself. He reportedly will be instrumental in making the Nick-Jess bond even tighter.
