Google Glass price and release date could spell doom for the wearable device due to a variety of expansions in the mobile device market. Competitive pricing for smartphones, and wearable devices like bracelets, smartwatches and google glass have already created mixed reactions after the CES 2014 trade show in Las Vegas.
Eric Schmidt,Chairman of Google told BBC early last year that after a few tweaks have been made with Explorer editions, consumers will get a feel for the final product in 2004.
Most reports say that the Google glass price and release date will be outed on April 2014. The price tag is $600. Glass Explorer Robert Scoble said in his Google Plus post that the gadget, which originally looked like a great idea might be "doomed" even before hitting the market. "If it's $600 and dorky looking, it'll be doomed," Scoble said in a International Digital Times report after a U.K. poll showed that 53% of respondents said $600, what a high end smartphone would cost, is too much for the wearable gadget. This leaves Google with high expectations for its Glass.
Gizmodo posted a statement from Google detailing why an announcement about prescription glasses is necessary: "This marks the next phase in the evolution of Glass as we move towards a wider consumer launch later in 2014. We started with five colors and an overall design that could fit a wide range of Explorers, their lifestyles and interests. "Today, we're expanding our offering to a new group of Explorers, those who wear prescription glasses and enjoy sunglasses. The four new Glass frames and three shades will give even more people the opportunity to make Glass their own."
The additional prescription glasses will go for "$225 for the frames, however, Explorers should check their health benefits to see if they're reimbursable. The shades are $150 each."
"Starting last fall, we've been slowly expanding the Explorer program and we'll continue to do that until our consumer launch towards the end of 2014," said Google.
