Game of Thrones has released their Season 4 preview called Ice and Fire: A Foreshadowing. An in-depth look at what's to come in the new season, the HBO show hinted at revenge and more thrills lying ahead.
The 14-and-a-half-minute preview unsurprisingly gave out a few spoilers to whet viewers' appetites before the show starts it new season on April 6. It opened with a dizzying montage of scenes, with Jon Snow at the end saying, "It's as if I went to sleep for a year. When I woke up, the world has fallen apart."
Executive producer, writer, and director David Benioff then comes on and gives a cool hint at what the fourth season is all about. "There is tremendous clamor for revenge, especially in the wake of the Red Wedding." Various members of the cast then proceed to rehash the gruesome event that occurred at the end of the third season, and then Benioff turns up with another hint. "Some of the most shocking and mindblowing scenes of the entire series come at the end of this coming season - some very bloody confrontations."
Benioff also speaks of Tyrion Lannister's fate this season. "This is definitely the most dangerous season for Tyrion. It seems like almost every episode he's in jeopardy of getting his head removed from his shoulders."
Peter Dinklage, who plays the estranged Lannister, talks about his character as well. "Tyrion has never been faced with this much humiliation because he usually has an answer for it," he said. "He's usually center-stage, and he usually is better at it than people around him. This time around, he's left as an audience member."
Lena Heady, who plays Cersei Lannister, tells of how her character will be a sort of the cause of much of Tyrion's misery this season. Dinklage however, adds that Jaime Lannister (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), will be helping Tyrion.
The preview also introduced new character Oberyn Martell, showing his hatred for the Lannisters. Executive producer, writer, and director D.B. Weiss pointed out that the Red Viper of Dorne mainly just wants vengeance.
A few scenes from the Purple Wedding of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell were also shown, with an emphasis on the scale of the event. The show also put up an update on Daenerys Targaryen's dragons, how much they've grown since the last season, and how the Targaryen princess is losing control over them. Then there's Jon Snow, and how he's coping with leaving the Wildlings, and then some other characters get their own updates.
A Foreshadowing also included some lighthearted behind-the-scenes moments of the cast in between all the intense moments. Although it ended with a lot of action-packed scenes, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, gave viewers some breathing room with a comforting statement: "The good guys are coming back this year, and um, that's nice to see. Yeah, we're making a stand."
