Fox's new DC television project 'Gotham' continues to grow as the show announced the characters Penguin, Alfred Pennyworth, Sarah Essen and more will be cast in the show, which will feature the death of Batman's parents in the pilot episode.

With the announcement of Ben Mckenzie of the famed "Southland" and "The O.C." series portraying the young Commissioner James Gordon, Gotham the series has certainly "raised the bar" for Batman fanatics around the world.

"Walking Dead" Season 4 guest star Robin Taylor will portray the villain Oswald Cobblepot better known as The Penguin in the Batman mythos. Warner Bros. described the characters as "With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney, and hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor."

Sean Pertwee of CBS' "Elementary" will portray Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's butler and confidant. He's character is described as "a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he's fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne."

Zabryna Guevara will portray Captain Sarah Essen Detective Gordon's boss at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad. Her character balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that's as much corporate litigator as cop.

Additional characters include Barbara Kean, Gordon's fiancée and future wife played by Erin Richards.

'Gotham' will explore "the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous," with its pilot supposedly featuring Gordon's investigation of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The pilot will also be written and executive produced by 'The Mentalist"s Bruno Heller, along with Warner Bros. Television, and directed by Danny Cannon. It has been confirmed that 'Gotham' will not have any direct ties to Ben Affleck's take on the Dark Knight for 'Man of Steel' follow-up film 'Batman vs. Superman' or The CW's 'Arrow' series.
