The song from the Disney animated film "Frozen" has shook the whole world; and now "Let it Go" goes K-pop! That's right, the movie was so huge in South Korea that the country became the most successful market outside the United States, according to Hollywood Reporter. Reports also revealed that the Walt Disney movie has grossed more than $75 million in South Korea.
"Frozen" also sold more than 10 million movie tickets, which means that approximately one out of five locals have seen the adventures of the fearless princess who tries to find her estranged sister. According to South Korean film critic Jeong Ji-ouk, "I believe the film's Broadway musical appeal attracted audiences."
Not many people know that live musicals are quite big in Korea. It all started when K-pop stars were casted for the theatre plays. A perfect example of this was "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", which starred pop singer Yang Yoseob. Mr. Yang is the lead vocalist of the famous boy band group Beast.
In an interview with The New York Times, producer Chang Jun-won revealed "Ten years ago, five years ago, ticket sales depend on a musical coming from Broadway or London, or having a Tony Award, but today, K-pop casting has become the No. 1 criteria for a lot of shows."
No wonder the Oscar-winning song "Let it Go" has gone K-pop as well. The soundtrack of "Frozen" reached the top of music charts in Korea. Some of the country's most popular artists got inspired by the song and decided to make their own version of the Idina Menzel hit.
Here’s an example of the “Let it Go” K-pop version:
The lead singer of the South Korean girl band Sistar, Hyolyn or also known as Hyorin, was chosen to sing the soundtrack for the Korean release of “Frozen”. Her version was uploaded on YouTube and has already received more than a million hits as of today. More “Let it Go” K-pop versions can be seen going viral on YouTube.
