Google Nexus 8 Tablet release date is expected by July 2014, according to published reports. And it could be powered by a next generation OS, aka Android 4.5 or perhaps even an Android 5, say insiders to the story.
Though Google's Android has been faring well, despite the delayed roll of the ongoing Android 4.4 Kit Kat update, more consumers seem to be switching to Android over iOS, now known to be a smartphone used by a very selective class of business executives...sort of what Blackberry was a couple of years ago.

The rumor of a new Android OS moving on to a new Google Nexus 8 tablet with a mid-year release date first emerged from a Dublin-based Google employee who squealed the information to news media in Taiwan.
The rumor of a Google Nexus 8 release date appears to be likely since Google has indicated it will discontinue the current Google Nexus 7 tab in order to explore the 8" space a bit more. It could have more success since it would compete with the 8" iPad Mini and the 9" iPad itself.

Bigger tabs might not play well except as desktop tablets because of the lack of portability. On the other end of the scale, a host of 7" tabs ranging from Samsung, Blackberry Playbook, and others like Acer, Lenovo have had considerable success and have saturated the 7" market.

Apart from the iPad Mini, the Nexus 8 will compete with the Samsung Galaxy 8.4 tab,and the LG G Pad 8.3 recently debuted at the MWC 2014 in Barcelona. There's a possibility that Intel will power the Nexus 8 despite the fact that Asus is the hardware partner of Google, The Fool.com reports.

Making its entry into the 8" space, the Nexus tab will be equipped with a 64-bit Snapdragon 805 processor.
Following in the tradition of Jelly Bean, Kit Kat, the next Android OS will take the name of another dessert loved by kids everywhere - lollilop or lemon meringue pie. Lollipop seems more befitting but Google might surprise us.
