President Barack Obama appeared on comedian Zach Galifianakis’ “Between Two Ferns” on the Funny or Die website. The video of their mock interview was uploaded onto the website on Tuesday morning and received more than three million views within the first few hours after it went live. White House aides already hailing the venture into pop cultural promotion a great success. Tara McGuinness, a White House senior communications adviser tweeted that the video has become the number one driver of traffic to the reform’s website, Healthcare.gov.
During President Obama’s six-and-a-half-minute “interview” with Galifianakis, the president plays stern, and even irritated as the comedian asks a series of ridiculous questions, such as “What is like being the last black president?” (referring to the fact that Obama cannot run for a third term). President Obama quips back, “I don't think a president should have a third term. it's kind of like making a third hangover movie.”
The video is part of a campaign to convince young Americans to sign up for the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges before the March 31 deadline. Increasing participation from younger and healthier Americans is crucial to the reform’s success. Some would consider the president’s foray into humor a risky move, but it seems that the marketing attempt has been a success in promoting Obamacare. The buzz generated from the Between Two Ferns video on Tuesday illustrates the power of the comedy site.
"This is a perfect example of a great partnership with Funny or Die stepping up in a big way," says producer Eric Ortner. "The site has a very robust traffic base of young men and women who are on the edge of the cultural zeitgeist. It has an organic reach, and now the traditional media will be talking about it for days."
