Jem and the Holograms, the popular 80s cartoon, is going to be turned into a live action film! Jon M. Chu, best known for directing G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Justin Bieber's Believe documentary, is slated to direct the live action adaptation. Chu announced his new project in a YouTube video earlier today, which can be watched below.
Chu says in the video, "The movie, without giving away too much, is a modern day, live action reinvention of the 1980s Hasbro classic cartoon Jem and the Holograms." The film will be produced by Jason Blum and Justin Bieber's mentor Scooter Braun.
Chu doesn't give away too much about plot or cast of the exciting new Jem and the Holograms movie. However, he announces something special about the film. He wants the movie to be crowd-sourced; not in the way that the "Veronica Mars" movie was but rather in how ideas for the movie will be gathered. Chu wants fans to contribute their ideas via social media! "We want to invite you into our process and help us make our next movie, from writing music to designing costumes, to even casting. Whatever it is, we want you to be part of our creative team. Sort of like Kickstarter, but rather than asking for money, we're asking for your creativity," Chu says in the Youtube video, which also shows Blum and Braun.
Jem fans can submit images or videos via the hashtag #jemthemovie and tweet their ideas and thoughts they have about the show or character. The Jem team is also looking to cast "triple-threat" performers who can dance, sing and act via Twitter; aspiring Jem movie stars can submit their auditions via the social media website.
For those who are unfamiliar with the fun, musical cartoon, Jem and the Holograms is about the adventures of music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, and her band the Holograms.
