After what Neon Trees singer Tyler Glenn describes as living his life in the closet, the "Everybody Talks" singer has revealed that he is gay in an interview with Rolling Stone.
"I was going to learn to drive for my 30th birthday, but I came out instead," Glenn said, in an article that will be published in Friday's Rolling Stone magazine issue.
According to the Rolling Stone, Glenn stated that he sought to find himself as a teenager and throughout the later years.
"But I think I need to finally break away from that and be an adult," he said.
Glenn also revealed that his Mormon upbringing impacted his views of his sexuality, as the church continues to fight same-sex marriage. As more Mormons come as gay, Glenn also revealed that he has found acceptance in those around him. He said his family is aware and accepts his sexuality.
"I just said to him, 'It won't change anything," Glenn's mother Debbie Glenn said.
Neon Trees drummer Elaine Bradley, who is the band's most devout Mormon, also said that she is accepting of her bandmate.
"I think the only anxiety for me comes from people assuming things because I'm religious or assuming things because he's gay," Bradley said, according to Rolling Stone.
"I worry about people not understanding that he's neither angry at the church nor distanced himself," she added.
Glenn said that he found inspiration in Football player Michael Sam's bravery in becoming the first openly gay professional football player.
"I really love all of the sports figures that are coming out recently," he said, according to Rolling Stone. "I appreciated that Michael Samuel was like, 'I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.'"
Glenn is one of several public figures to publicly announce that they are this year. Actress Ellen Page also revealed that she was a lesbian at a conference in February.
