Barkhad Abdi Immigration Woes: ‘Captain Phillips’ Star Faces Legal Trouble After Sudden Fame; 'I Wasn't a Complete Man,' He Says

Somali Actor Barkhad Abdi recently found fame for his role as a pirate in Captain Phillips, but his life after the Oscar-nominated movie has not always been easy. Abdi's past criminal offenses recently caused him to be detained by immigration officers and he may face a court hearing this week.

Although Abdi is a permanent U.S. legal resident according to the Star Tribune, the star's offenses flagged him on his return to the U.S. from receiving an award in London.

Abdi was arrested for possession of marijuana in 2012, and the charges were later dropped. In addition, the Captain Phillips actor was also convicted of credit card fraud in 2005, along with several traffic violations.

The charges were considered misdemeanors but, according to Fox 9 News, Abdi could have been denied entry into the U.S. because of his rap sheet, had he not been a U.S. permanent resident. Abdi's status also differs from citizenship and is the cause of his immigration trouble.

Abdi has not commented on the detainment, but he has acknowledged his troubled history in the past.

"Our mistakes shape us," he said, in an interview with the Daily Beast. "You make a mistake and it makes you a better person. You learn from it. I wasn't a complete man."

Abdi's hearing is a check-in interview regarding his offenses. However, it is unlikely that his offenses could result in immigration action against him, as he does not have any serious offenses, according to the Star Tribune.

Abdi's life since Captain Phillips has been far from glitz and glamour. The former taxi cab driver was paid just $65,000 for his Oscar-nominated role.
