Against Me! Singer’s Gender Transition: 'Black Me Out' Vocalist Laura Jane Grace Says ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’ Album a ’Really Good Feeling’

It has been two years since Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace announced that she was transgendered and would be transitioning from male to female. With the release of a new album and the support of her family, Grace says that her experience has been a positive one.

Born as Tom Gabel, the singer's announcement came as a surprise to many, but not to Grace.

"I've dealt with gender dysphoria as early as I could remember," Grace said, in an interview with Billboard Magazine. "The decision to fully transition was something that took a long time to come to for sure. And it was something that I struggled with for a long time, but I got there at the end."

According to Grace, a large part of her positive experience comes in her newfound honesty. Against Me!'s latest release, Transgender Dysphoria Blues is a concept album that tells the story of a transgendered prostitute.

"This isn't the first time on an Against Me! record that I've written songs dealing with those feelings," she said. "But it's the first time that I think I'm able to be interpreted correctly or being able to be taken from the correct perspective."

"I'm a person who's going through gender transition and a lot of the record was written leading up to the decision to embrace that and to go public with that - in my private life and in my public life," Grace said, according to Billboard Magazine.

Grace said she found support in from her family, as Grace's wife and 4-year-old daughter have stood by decision to transition. Grace said her fans also stood by her and that she hoped to offer support to fans who were also considering transitioning.

"Many [fans] said I was an inspiration to them, but they are an inspiration to me," she said, in an interview with Cosmopolitan.

Against me!'s U.S. tour in support of Transgender Dysphoria Blues continues throughout May.
