Google will offer sales of Google Glass on Tuesday across the U.S. for one day only. The sole requirement is that you are a U.S. citizen and an adult. Google will give away sunglasses or free frames for first-time customers. The offer is available only until supplies last. Sales start at 9 a.m. ET on April 15.
The sale is the first time that the Google Glass has been made available to the public. Previous test versions were introduced to 'Explorers' to experiment with the features of Google Glass.
The face-mounted computers made quite a controversy since they were unveiled with the Glass' camera creating an upheaval for breaching privacy at restaurants and other public places. The device's small camera can record 720p video or snap still photographs.
CNN reports, "In the year since Google Glass was first shipped, it has been lauded as the future of computing, criticized for hastening the death of privacy, and mocked for looking silly. People wearing Glass have been banned from bars and restaurants, given tickets for distracted driving, and dubbed "Glassholes." It's been a busy year."
Analysts say more education and exposure is required to get rid of fears regarding privacy in order for the general public to adopt the novel technology that is a revolution in itself after the iPhone was introduced.
Google announced that its white, or "cotton" color Glass was sold out. By April 15 afternoon were still red, blue, gray and black shades are still open for purchase.
"Wow, what a morning! We're happy to see so many new faces (and frames) in the Explorer Program," Google's post on Google+ said after announcing the Cotton model impressive sales.
San Francisco-based developer Ben Farrell told CNN, "The annoying bit about designing games like this is having the user constantly looking down at their phone while trying to play the game in the real world." Google Glass allows the user to look straight up while engaging with the product.
Nate Gilbert, a Glass customer expressed alarm at the price, but that didn't stop him from getting a pair.
"I want to see how legit this is. What can it do," he said. "It seems like the future, but how close is it?"
Analysts say that Google Glass could be a revolutionary tool in 2014, particularly after trade show fans got a chance to get a closer look at CES International in Las Vegas.
The timely move by Google makes the Glass highly anticipated with the latest news stories about the Glass wanting the public to learn more about. According to the androidpolice.com, "The price remains faithfully locked in at $1500, but buyers will also have an option to choose between free frames (suitable for prescription lenses) or tinted shades."
The Google Glass price for prescription lens frames will cost an extra $250, while su.glasses in Active, and Classic designs will run you another $150.
