Philip Seymour Hoffman recently passed in February. However, the great actor has left a few completed films to help soften the blow of his tragic loss. His movie “God’s Pocket,” based on the novel of the same name by Pete Dexter, released its first trailer, which can be watched below. The film is directed by Mad Men star John Slattery in his feature-length directorial debut and also stars Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks, Richard Jenkins, and John Turturro. The script was adapted by Alex Metcalf.
The film follows Mickey Scarpato (Hoffman) who tries to cover up the death of his stepson in a "construction accident" in a gritty blue collar neighborhood. But when a journalist latches on to the story, Mickey finds things going from bad to worse. Mickey has very little affection for his wife Jeannie (Hendricks) and even less for his stepson Leon (Caleb Landry Jones) who is a terrible person with a drug problem. After Leon is killed in a construction accident, Jeannie has a hard time believing that there isn’t some foul play involved and wants Mickey to look into it. Mickey has to cart his dead stepson’s body around for a few days in the back of his meat truck. According to IndieWire, the film is a “a morbid, 1970’s-set bummer of a film.”
The independent film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in mid-January, just two weeks before Hoffman died of an overdose. The actor was at Sundance to promote the film. Later this year Hoffman will also be seen in Anton Corbijn's thriller "A Most Wanted Man.” IFC Films will release “God’s Pocket” in select theaters on May 9 before making the film available on VOD a week later.
