Selena Gomez fired her mom and dad as managers in early March, as she is looking to move her career beyond her teen idol image. According to Hollywood Life, Gomez's mom and stepdad are saying they had no warning that Gomez was firing them as her managers until the story hit the Internet last week. Mandy Teefey says she and her husband sat down with Selena on Thursday and Gomez confirmed that she wants to move into a new direction. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gomez has already found a new representation team. The actress and singer, who previously was with CAA, has signed with WME as well as Brillstein, where she will be represented by managers Aleen Keshishian, Zack Morgenroth and Scott Wexler.
Gomez, 21, is looking to get more into adult-oriented fare in film and music as she grows up. After getting her start on the Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place, she recently starred in Harmony Korine's wild crime drama "Spring Breakers," and also as a street kid in the movie "Getaway" with Ethan Hawke. She also recently completed shooting on the film "Behaving Badly" also starring Nat Wolff and Mary-Louise Parker. As for her music, Gomez has also been doing great. Her first solo album, "Stars Dance," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last summer with a triple-platinum lead single "Come & Get It." She had previously released three albums as part of her band, Selena Gomez & The Scene.
Gomez's mom and stepdad have managed the 21-year-old star since her big break at Disney years ago. However, after the news broke and daughter and mom spoke, Teefey says she respects her daughter's decision and still plans to produce several Gomez movies, including the upcoming "The Sky Is Everywhere," he big-screen adaptation of the Jandy Nelson novel. According to Deadline, Gomez will play Lennie in the movie. Lennie is a 17-year-old nerdy girl who loses her older, more popular sister Bailey. After Bailey's death, Lennie must learn to be more than she has been when she falls for two guys (one of whom was Bailey's boyfriend).
