One Direction Latest News: One Direction have been accused of pirating the concept for their music video "You & I" from Australian film and animation company Oh Yeah Wow, which has developed content for artists like Gotye and Ben Folds Five.
According to Daily Mail, the Melbourne based film production company who made the video for the band's track Everything You Wanted last year, took grievance to social media, Facebook, not long after One Direction's video was released to point out what they believe are similarities. They said Thursday that One Direction's latest music video looks suspiciously similar to the one they produced last year for Clubfeet.
The company posted, "Dear friends. As you may already know, those money machines One Direction & the sneaky chimps at Fulwell 73 Productions have decided to rip off our music video for Clubfeet. We here at Oh Yeah Wow have become somewhat fed up with plagiarism and as such, have decided to write about it. If you feel a rage face coming on, please share this link with the world."
According to Daily Mail, the company explains their stance, making it clear they are not against creative evolution; they are merely concerned the hard work they put into creating the effect will not be recognised.
The company added, "Late Friday night whilst we were busy observing the good traditions of the public holiday, something very suspicious was brought to our attention It seems that the chaps of One Direction have taken it upon themselves to regurgitate our original concept, as seen in our award-winning clip for Clubfeet's 'Everything You Wanted.' Don't get us wrong, we here at Oh Yeah Wow are big One Direction fans and are envious of their ability to maintain flawless hairdos. The wider problem is, that plagiarism and copycatting is becoming increasingly common and acceptable. ... Considering the sleep deprivation one must endure to create an original piece with practically no budget, you can start to understand the annoyance we might feel when some affluent young bucks and a director devoid of creativity, decide to effectively steal (and subsequently dilute) our idea."
According to UPI, Oh Yeah Wow is specifically referring to the "freezing" effect.
According to daily Mail, Seamus Spilsbury from the company claimed that Oh Yeah Wow who directed Gotye's Easy Way Out video, were the first to use the effect.
"The technique is created using a number of well-established VFX tricks. Our clip was the first to use these tricks in this conceptual context," he said.
"We haven't heard any word from the band ... we have had a few emails from fans though, some voicing their anger and others that are supporting us. The One Direction fans sure are a passionate bunch!" he told the Couriermial.
You & I will be released on May 25 as the fourth single from their album, Midnight Memories.
