"Divergent" star Shailene Woodley may have seen her fame shot up with all the hype surrounding the film, but it didn't help her land Mary Jane's role in "Spider-Man 2" and she's pretty bummed about it. With the news, fans heaved a collective sigh of relief since the 22-year-old actress is deemed not pretty enough as the web-slinger's love interest.
"Of course I'm bummed but I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason," she told Entertainment Weekly.
She also said that based on the progression of the characters according to the plot, she couldn't possibly have Mary Jane's role because the Marvel character wouldn't have to be introduced until the next film. But "The Spectacular Now" actress already filmed three scenes for Mary Jane in Late February and early March, according to MailOnline.
"Spider-Man 2" director Marc Webb, meanwhile, justified cutting off Shailene Woodley in Mary Jane's role as saying that there's a need to play out the romance between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone).
But he did say that Shailene Woodley is an "incredibly talented actress."
"While we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Divergent" star Shailene Woodley will play next a 16-year-old high school girl who is terminally ill with cancer who finds love in the film "The Fault in Our Stars."
Fans took to Twitter proclaiming that "Divergent" star Shailene Woodley would have been wrong for Mary Jane's role in "Spider-Man 2" because the web-slinger's girlfriend "is supposed to be hot," said one fan per MailOnline.
Peter Parker fan and movie nut Josh Wilding wrote on his Twitter account, per IBT: "Shailene Woodley is a fine actress, but was never right for Mary Jane Watson"
Hot Cherrae @hotcherrae chimed in: "so shailene woodley's parts got cut off from the amazing spider-man? wow she was supposed to be mary jane...... i love her but no."
