San Francisco Giants vs. Pittsburgh Pirates FREE LIve Streaming Online from PNC Park on Monday Night at 7:05 PM ET, TRADE RUMORS?
After a sandwich-cutting mishap, the Giants Matt Cain is ready to get back on the mound.
He's hoping to open May on the right foot after another winless April.
Cain goes for his first victory since August as the surging Giants begin a three-game road set against the Pirates.
Cain (0-3, 4.35 ERA) is set to take the hill for the first time in almost two weeks. He was scratched Tuesday with a cut on the tip of his right index finger suffered while attempting to pick up a knife.
"It's on the forefinger about half an inch, but it's in a bad spot there," manager Bruce Bochy said.
Failing to record a victory in the opening month is nothing new for Cain, who also went winless in April 2010 and '13. He's gone 8-1 with a 3.27 ERA in May over the previous two seasons for his most wins in any month during that time.
Cain has also been superb against Pittsburgh (12-19) of late, going 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA during a seven-start stretch in the series.
Locke is expected to be recalled for a spot start following Thursday's doubleheader. The left-hander made the All-Star team last year before struggling down the stretch, finishing 10-7 with a 3.52 ERA.
Locke went 1-5 with a 6.66 ERA over his final 11 starts and was left off the postseason roster.
"He's certainly had his share (of challenges) since the second half of last season," manager Clint Hurdle told the Pirates' official website. "This is a great opportunity for him to embrace what he has and to keep focused on where he wants to go, and how to get there."
The Pirates had lost 15 of 19 before posting back-to-back wins over Toronto, but their struggles resumed in a 7-2 defeat Sunday. Pittsburgh, which managed four hits, has dropped 13 straight when scoring three or fewer runs.
