Michael Bay movies are very controversial even before they come out!
The negative buzz that the 2014 TMNT movie is getting is very reminiscent of the same buzz that surrounded when the first Michael Bay Transformers movie was announced.
Fans of the old Terminator cartoon were flabbergasted by the way the Transformers looked in the trailer and movie, and hated the casting of the then-popular Shia LaBeouf. This however didn't deter the movie from being a blockbuster hit, and after two more sequels and an upcoming fourth movie, the Transformers franchise is a sure mega-money-maker.
Now, let's take a look at the TMNT reboot where the same ‘tactic' seems to be applied. First, Michael Bay enrages the geek world by claiming that the Turtles in the upcoming TMNT 2014 movie are aliens and not Ninjas by the ooze filled back-story that fans are familiar with, according to screenrant.com. Later on, Michael Bay took his statement back after its inevitable backlash that almost broke the internet.
Michael Bay seems to be a genius when it comes to planned "misinformation" to garner media buzz for his movies. He knows how to pull on the heartstrings of every passionate geek, anger them to the point of contempt, and pull the rug from underneath them, then cash-in on the controversy.
The same can be said for the trailer found in youtube.com, which hints that the beloved Turtles may have been created by Shredder and April O'Neil's father (thus further enraging the geek purists). This can be another strategy to get the buzz going and ultimately raise our curiosity, and eventually see the movie once it premieres, but only to find out that all it really was a ploy.
For Michael Bay and his movies "there is no such thing as bad publicity", and boy does he know how to milk the cow dry to that respect.
In the end, fans and detractors of the upcoming TMNT 2014 movie will fill the seats of every movie house. The movie will make a massive amount of money worldwide, two more sequels will follow, and we're back to internet-breaking trailer-sequels again.
So, the angrier you are at Michael Bay and his movies, just remember that he's richer for it.
