Joseph Benavidez's MMA opinion about having openly gay fighters competing in the UFC made news headlines as "Joe B-Wan Kenobi" seemed to follow the stance of UFC president Dana White regarding the matter.
Combat sports have had its share of fighters who have come out of the closet. In 2013, perennial women's bantamweight contender Liz Carmouche opened up about her sexuality and so did former boxing champion Orlando Cruz in 2012.
While no other UFC fighter has followed Carmouche's footsteps, the organizations management and Dana White showed no problems whatsoever regarding the matter.
Dana White stated "he could care less if there was a gay fighter in the UFC" and wishes "he would come out."
Joseph Benavidez's MMA opinion regarding the matter is on the same page as his employers and "Joe B-Wan Kenobi" even expressed his excitement about the idea.
"Why not?" Joseph Benavidez of MMA fame said in an interview with FOX Sports. "It would be cool to see a gay guy just beat the s*** out of somebody. I think that would be that much cooler. Busting a stereotype."
Other UFC fighters were also in agreement regarding the issue. Former number one contender Miesha Tate believes that people should not be afraid to be who they are, and that it is "what America stands for."
Light heavyweight fighter Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis also voiced his opinion on the matter, and says that they would not think any less of any one that did so, and that it has nothing to do with their capabilities inside the cage.
Meanwhile, reigning champion Jon "Bones" Jones has been keeping mum regarding the matter. He says he is not sure about how he feels about openly gay fighters competing in mixed martial arts.
"I don't really know what I think about homosexuality and MMA," Jones replied. "I've never really put much thought into it. It's a very sensitive topic. I'd rather not even comment on it."
