PS4 Online Service, Beta Testing Commences May 20; Sony Expands To Broader Audience In Anticipation Of PlayStation Now Release Date

Sony invites beta testers to participate in preparation for the PlayStation Now release date. The console's online portal is adding more devices compatible with downloadable content.

Sony's beta tests have been ongoing since January this year, and it's stepping up the campaign by expanding coverage. The final version is set to be released in the summer.

The beta version of the online service is currently exclusively available for the PS3, but is expanding May 20 to cover content for the PlayStation 4 as well. Subscribers to the service will be notified and sent voucher codes via email.

The PlayStation Now release date will offer a unique service, streamed instead of downloadable content. Subscribers are able to play games on-the-fly, similar to pay-per-view television and programs. Content is streamed directly to the console (or compatible device) without the need for a Blu-ray disc or pre-download.

A handful of Sony devices are already supported by the service. The PlayStation 3 and 4, Vita, and Bravia TVs (selected) are compatible. PlayStation Now is expected to become compatible with more devices in the coming months.

Testing the beta version of the service gives participants first crack at the features. More importantly, developers benefit with fine-tuning and optimization; Private Beta testers have already docked more than fifty thousand hours of intense gameplay, sifting through bugs while searching for new games and gameplay modes, collecting trophies.

PlayStation Now release date anticipates overwhelming reception from subscribers, and the beta tests are expected a wider coverage over the following months. Sony intends to pool in more tests in the broader United States, and is offering slots for participants (playstation.com).

Leaked screenshots of the service were previously released, although the content offered were teasers instead of playable, accessible demos. An exact PlayStation Now release date is yet to be confirmed, and previews showcase back titles from the previous generation of consoles available.
