Led Zeppelin's legendary single "Stairway to Heaven" is indeed one of the Greatest Songs of All Time as reported by Rolling Stone magazine. However, it seems like nearly 43 years after the single release, the intro of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is now claimed plagiarized from the song "Taurus" by American band Spirit!
Music News reported that Francis Alexander Maloify, the lawyer of Spirit's late guitarist Randy California filed a lawsuit to prevent the official release of the English rock band's reissue of their fourth album "Led Zeppelin IV" which contains Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" in the official track listing. Maloify claimed that the intro track of Led Zeppelin's signature single "Stairway to Heaven" is the same as Spirit's instrumental song "Taurus" which is the title track of the American psychedelic band's debut album Spirit, recorded in 1967 and released in 1968. Meanwhile Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was recorded between December 1970 and March 1971, and it was eventually released on November 1971, topped US and UK music charts and won a Grammy award.
The news that Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was indeed plagiarized stated back in 1968, when the band became the opening act for Spirit at their first American tour. Randy California tells in an interview that people ask him why Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" sounds exactly like "Taurus." The guitarist's interview was published after his death in 1997.
Maloify claims that by blocking the release date of the reissued version of album "Led Zeppelin IV," he will be able to get California as a co-writer for Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and obviously, a portion of the song profits.
