Sony Cooks Up A Treat, Major PS4 Upgrade In Development? Enhanced Graphics Chip For The PlayStation 4, Also On The PS3

Is Sony set to release a PS4 upgrade similar to the previous PS3 and PS2 evolutions? Filed certification requests suggest that the company plans to roll out new versions of the consoles, sooner than expected.

Months after the PlayStation 4's launch, it is reported Sony is already planning on releasing new models of the console. Registration requests were filed for "Computer Entertainment Systems," details to be disclosed, to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.

A published request indicates a unit with a proposed model number (CUH-1106A); based on previous versions of Sony's flagship console, it's likely a description of significant upgrade, rather than a visual makeover.

The reported PS4 upgrade is preceded by the change in the PS3's model number; the first PlayStation 3 Slim came out with a CECH-2001A code and a 65nm RSX graphics chip, and the upgraded version (40nm graphics chip) came out with CECH 2101A.

The PlayStation 4's current code is CUH 1006A; compare this with the proposed model number CUH-1106A, pending registration.

It's likely the capacity of the PS4's hard disk will remain, if the model numbers are to be considered. Based on precedents, the last character of code should be affected by a hard disk upgrade: in the case of the PS3, from CUH-1006A to CUH-1006B.

In addition to the PS4 upgrade, Sony is also set to release a similar evolution for its PS3. The company isn't abandoning its previous-gen console just yet. A second system with the model number CECH-4306CH is proposed, an enhancement on the PlayStation 3's super slim model.

Sales of the PS3 peaked in recent months, and stocked units were sold out at major retailers. An interruption in supply likely prompted Sony to consider an overhaul, with announcements to pair with the reported PS4 upgrade at this June's E3 event (dualshockers.com).
