Cyber bullying & online harassment involving an University of Wisconsin-River Falls freshman , Alyssa Funke, 19, led to her suicide.
The incident followed online messages from students at her former high school who cyber bullied Funke for her role in a 'casting couch' porn video.
Her parents say that the online harassment emanating from outing her as a porn star led to the suicide. She apparently bought a shotgun, drove to her family boat and killed herself.
Alyssa was an 'A' student and her video on the CastingCouch X amateur site was her only pornographic video. She went under the cover name Stella Anna and discussed her interest in sports, biology and her ambition to be an anesthesiologist.
After the video was shot earlier in the year, students from her high school in Minnesota sent her nasty Twitter and Facebook messages.
"Nothing brings a school together like a porn star who graduated last year. I guess you could say news spreads fast here at Stillwater hahah," read one student response on Twitter.
Funke posted her final "tweets, saying Funke seemed to brush off the cyber bullies, writing "Famous for dayzzzzzzz," and "Pornstar Status."
According to Funke's parents, she was suffering depression for a long time but the events that culminated to her suicide were linked to the online harassment.
The parents have started a cyberbullying site which posted a statement, " On a fundraiser page they started to fight cyberbullying, they wrote, "Alyssa like so many other teens was a victim of bully and sadly the bullying lead to her death. Social media has revolutionized the way people bully eachother now days. Now you can say whatever you want and not have to look the person in the face while doing it."
FOX 9 reported that cyberbullying is not an act of criminal harassment, while the Washington County (Minn.) Sheriff's Office is looking into the details around Funke's death.
