Cox Communications 1Gb/s Cable Roll Out To Rival Google Fiber Wi-Fi, AT&T Internet

Cox Communications is jumping on the high speed Internet bandwagon by increasing speeds to 1 Gb/second. The roll out will begin in Phoenix, Omaha and Las Vegas. These speeds from Cox Communications are several times faster than regular broadband. The plan is likely to be implemented towards the end of the year.

The attempt to offer faster Internet speeds will rival the Google fiber wifi initiatives in Kansas City, Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah, and AT&T's rollout in Austin.

Other spots in San Diego; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Orange County, California; Providence, Rhode Island; and Tucson, Arizona will be considered for 1 Gb/sec Internet as long as it is within the Cox footprint; this is an attempt for Cox to include new residential properties under construction in these areas. By the end of 2016, Cox Communications will provide increased speeds to its other service areas, Times of India reports.

Cox, the 3rd biggest U.S. cable firm, serves six million in the nation. The privately held firm will double the most popular services to its customers later this year. This would bump up 25 Mbps to 50Mbps and those with 50Mbps to 100Mbps. These two tiers include approximately 70% of Cox Communications clients.

Cox is in stiff competition with Google, which offers a "basic speed" service free of charge, a 1 GB/sec service for $70/month and a $120 package with a bundle of 200 TV channels. Installation costs may vary from nothing to $300.

According to reports, "Thirty four cities are slated to receive Google Fiber next year and Google disclosed its intentions about subsidized Google Fiber Wifi in order to proceed with its plans." Google fiber wifi may be available for free in its network cities and towns. The search engine giant is now mulling over offering high speed Internet Wi-Fi networks through its high-speed Internet service.
