Google Fiber Wifi Program To Test Reliable Outdoor High Speed Internet Zones In Kansas City

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Fiber Wifi testing is underway in Kansas City. This will be an experiment for future outdoor Wifi undertakings, said Google.

Google's free fiber wifi outdoor public testing system was used recently at the Crown Center in Kansas City MO. However, this is still in the nascent stages.

Eweek quoted a Google spokeswoman as saying, "We want to deliver great Wi-Fi outside, which is really hard to do. So we're using this test as an opportunity to try and make our network fast and consistent." She added, ". "In the future, we'd like to be able to launch more Wi-Fi zones throughout Kansas City."

In early May, Google got in touch with local Kansas City leaders and those from 34 other cities to gauge their interest in receiving free public Wi-Fi services included in the Google Fiber plan. The Kansas City deployment of the Google fiber program ensures that the plan will go ahead.

Google announced in the beginning of the year that it is interested in offering its high speed fiber service to cities like Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Morrisville, Garner and Cary. Charlotte and Atlanta are also considered for the Wifi program. Google will make a final checklist of the companies involved by the end of December.

According to a report by the Triangle Business Journal, Google Fiber is not the only product that the Mountainview, search engine firm has in mind for Raleigh, N. Carolina. The market for outdoor access is another service that Google would like to implement. If the Google fiber wifi plan goes well, then the opportunity to start an outdoor service looks like a second opportunity for the tech firm to grow its network of customers.

Google's statement, "We'd love to be able to bring outdoor Wi-Fi access to all of our Fiber cities, although we don't have any specific plans to announce right now" - it's something that is being delivered in Kansas City, where Google Fiber made its debut. Kansas City is currently testing "one small outdoor public Wi-Fi zone."

The test run underway in Kansas is necessary since Wifi runs on a limited spectrum, and heavy online traffic may lead to interference. So a test run where Google Fiber first began is an appropriate step for Google.

While Google Fiber began in 2011 as a pilot project, this year several locations like Phoenix, San Jose and San Antonio have expanded as expansion sites. This has already put some pressure on rival cable firms and Internet providers like as Comcast CMCSA +0.52%, Verizon VZ +0.58% and AT&T T -0.17%.
