Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson disappointed fans when it was revealed that they would not be returning to season 2 of "True Detective."
Further cast and setting details for season 2 of the hit detective show have been released, according to Variety.
"We're working with three leads. It takes place in California - not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California - and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season 1," stated creator Nic Pizzolatto in an interview with public radio program "To the Best of Our Knowledge."
Pizzolatto added, "The characters are all new, but I'm deeply in love with each of them. We've got the entire series broken out with a couple scripts, and we'll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months."
Although the three new leads for the show have yet to be cast, Pizzolatto says that casting should begin in the next few weeks as well, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"Zero Dark Thirty" actress Jessica Chastain denied rumors that she was offered a role in season 2 of "True Detective."
"It's an awkward thing because when all that attention happens - it takes away from whoever plays the role. I'm a big fan of the series. I'm going to watch the second season just like I watched every episode of the first," stated Chastain.
Season 2 of "True Detective" will have a story separate from season 1 and will focus on the lives of the new characters.
Nic Pizzolatto had previously told HitFix that the season 2 of "True Detective" would be about "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."
The creator of the HBO show went in detail about what makes "True Detective" stand out amongst the slew of detective shows.
"It's a story that uses the popular genre of police investigation to conduct a more nuanced metaphysical investigation of its characters and their world. In 'True Detective,' the world itself is the crime... This corruption at the root of the world. The poison at the root of the world is humanity," stated Pizzolatto.
